Although Cybertron might be done for, this game (which is a sequel to 2010’s “Transformers: War for Cybertron”) is certainly not a loss. In fact, Fall of Cybertron does exactly what gaming franchise sequels should do – improve upon the successful elements of previous titles and upgrade visuals and gameplay mechanics where appropriate.
One of the better aspects of FoC is the use of multiple playable characters across levels. You’ll actually control various characters throughout the course of the game; this creates a sense of increased scope or freedom as you survey the various landscapes. In the words of Optimus Prime himself, “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings”.
Visuals
As previously stated, this game is really an improvement on its predecessor in a number of ways, visuals being one of the most obvious areas that were upgraded. Most noticeably, you won’t encounter the same homogenized type of level design that you saw in WfC. Fall of Cybertron employs a great deal of variety when it comes to environments; decrepit cities, desert ruins, and grimy underground settings all add diversity and further enhance the experience.
Gameplay
Unlike the previous series entry, this time around, you’ll actually get to control individual bots with their own unique abilities. In fact, the level design for each chapter and mission has been built around the abilities of specific types of characters. However, individual bots are also upgradeable and virtually anything you unlock or collect is shared between all the characters you use.
Aside from the campaign you also have the wonderful escalation mode, which allows for some excellent co-op multiplayer action. Likewise, you can always engage your friends in deathmatches (with bot switching capabilities intact, I might add).
Verdict
Simply put, Fall of Cybertron is a big improvement on the previous entry to the series in almost every way. Fans of the movie franchise will be particularly satisfied with this game as it explores the conflict from multiple angles and offers direct participation in the mayhem. This is a very fun game that’s quite a bit different from most other stuff that’s currently out there.
