Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Review

Fans of the Tekken franchise rejoice, the sequel to the runaway mega-hit “Tekken Tag Tournament” is finally here! Ask virtually anybody that’s into fighting games or is old enough to have owned a PS2 and they’ll tell you, the Tekken series is among the finest ever devised for its genre. Well, after nearly a decade, it seems that we finally have the long-awaited follow-up in this incredible arcade fighting franchise.

Gamers have already commented that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is very true to its roots and Namco Bandai hasn’t attempted to change its winning formula very much at all. Having said that, the biggest alteration from 1 to 2 is in the visuals department; in other words, all visual aspects of TTT2 have been dramatically improved. As manyother have already noted, the visual styles of Tekken 6 are prominently featured in this outing (which is more than welcome, of course). You can basically sum up Tekken Tag Tournament 2’s visuals with one word, polish.

While the controls and gameplay elements of TTT2 are largely unchanged from previous entries from the series, there have actually been some alterations made to the way tag- team attacks are carried out. Tag Assault is a new feature which allows fighters to essentially double-team a grounded opponent. For example, using Tag Assault can deal deadly amounts of damage but might leave you in a more vulnerable state. Like the original Tag Tournament, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 doesn’t feature a traditional story mode. However, there is a “fight lab” mode that provides some critical training and entertaining bits of twisted fun which serve to provide an explanation for certain events in
the game.

As you might expect, the most immediately gratifying feature of TTT2 is its online play capabilities. Simply put, this title has been expertly crafted to provide gamers with a much smoother experience than they might otherwise anticipate. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t encounter any streak-destroying freezes, crashes or lag outs. Basically, this is one of the most stable Tekken titles ever when it comes to online play.

There are plenty of reasons why fans of fighting games should be excited about this game (older and younger alike). In some ways, Tekken is re-establishing itself as a dominant force in its genre with the release of this title. One thing is for certain however, anyone who played and enjoyed the original Tekken Tag Tournament is going to absolutely love this latest installment. Likewise, younger gamers who are just now discovering the Tekken franchise are likely to be floored by just how fun and addictive TTT2 actually is.
