The year was 1959 when the record label Motown Records was first launched, forming a platform for the release of this new genre of music that combined Rhythm and Blues music with Pop. SingStar: Motown for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is set to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of this influential record label in style. Grab your wireless microphone and prepare to sing your heart out to the many different classics on offer with this game title.
The basic premise of SingStar: Motown follows that of the previous games in the SingStar series. With your microphone in hand you must first select your track of choice, before belting the lyrics down it in an attempt to match, as closely as possible, the vocals of the stars who sang the songs. Unfortunately, if you’re not already in possession of a SingStar microphone you will be forced to purchase one separately, none are included with the game itself. These microphones are easy to find though, and usually come in sets of two to allow you to do vocal battle with friends and family members.
A range of different singing options will seem familiar to fans of the SingStar series, with the game incorporating modes such as duet and battle. There’s even an online community when it comes to games in these titles. It allows you to record your stunning rendition of you all time favourites and upload the footage for folks around the globe to marvel at (or laugh at). Access to this online community also allows you to download additional songs from the 850 plus available through the SingStar Store, at an additional cost per song.
SingStar: Motown boasts a collection of thirty songs in its own right from Motown legends such as The Supremes, The Jackson 5 and even Marvin Gaye. You’re bound to have heard some of the well known tunes on offer, such as ‘Stop in the Name of Love’. The familiarity of the songs will undoubtedly help you in your performance, though it does seem that some other well known titles from the era are significantly missing, such as more tracks from the legendary Diana Ross and the household name Stevie Wonder.
This game is the most challenging in the SingStar series to date and is set to have individuals the world over crooning to their top Motown tunes. If you’re not a fan of this particular music genre yourself you may wish to consider other games within the series first, though the ability to hand your parents a microphone each and to watch them belt out the tunes together is sure to be priceless.
