Little Big Planet 2 Review

Is Little Big Planet 2 on PS3 The Game of 2011?

There is a reason why Little Big Planet 2 on PS3 has quickly taken over as the number one game and bumped Black Ops down to number two, the game is mad creative!  This is more than just gaming, it really is a revolution.  Little Big Planet 2 allows you to create new adventures, levels and entire games for your Sackperson (previously called a Sackboy in the game’s predecessor).  Not only that, you can jump online and literally play millions of different levels that have been created by other players.  You could play this game every single day and never get bored because there are endless worlds to explore and puzzles to solve.

Storyline

While there is a fun and quirky storyline in Little Big Planet 2 on PS3, you will find that it is short and easy to clear within a day.  However, the game really isn’t about the pre-designed levels, it’s about what you can create and playing the millions of possibilities online.  The storyline of the game introduces you to loveable characters and can almost be compared to doing your stretching exercises before you run a marathon.

For those who played the first Little Big Planet, you will feel right at home as the game picks right back up with Sackboy’s journey.  In the sky, above Little Big Planet is a massive inter-dimensional vacuum cleaner that hungrily sucks up the inhabitants, Sackboy included.  Luckily, Larry Da Vinci who is the leader of The Alliance, a secret group, rescues him just in time from The Negativitron.  Sackboy joins the alliance, who’s focus is to battle and defeat The Negativitron before the Craftworld is destroyed for good!

Gameplay

If you thought the first installment couldn’t be improved upon, you are in for such a surprising treat with Little Big Planet 2!  The levels are more creative, create mode is substantially more user-friendly and with new tools like animals you can ride, grapple hooks and power gloves that you can throw your enemy or any object with, it’s hard not to instantly be melted by the thoughts of endless adventure.

To discuss specific gameplay is nearly impossible with Little Big Planet 2.  One minute you will  be dodging flaming fireflies, frosted cupcakes or a bee shooting honey and the next, you’ll be jumping obstacles, grappling walls and looking for bubbles and hidden prizes.  Since levels, puzzles and worlds are created based on the creativity of others (and yourself), you never know what you are going to encounter!  There’s puzzles, racing, fighting, role-playing and best of all, be on the look out for the giant Creatinator that lets you shoot whatever you want!  That’s one feature that is sure to put a big smile on your face.

Little Big Planet 2 retains the 2.5D nature from its predecessor, allowing you to control your Sackboy without being restricted to platforming levels.  There are new animation recording options and you can manipulate the camera and even create cut-scenes while designing levels.  Little Big Planet 2 provides a nice selection of music as well as a sequencer so you can link levels together.

Sackboy is much more responsive in this game, making him easier to control, drive vehicles, etc., and enemy creation has seen quite an improvement as well.  Players are now empowered to create non-player characters called Sackbots who can be controlled in the level by their creator.  The possibilities of fun are endless and if you get lonely you are able to team up with three more Sackpeople both locally and online.

Graphics

At first glance, you may think Little Big Planet 2 is designed for kids but the graphics certainly say otherwise.  There is really not a complaint that can be made about the stunning and crisp display you are granted during gameplay.  This is by far one of PS3’s best looking games.  The colors are unparalleled and the realism and shadowing of the objects draws you in and keeps you interested.  Every environment and object is not only detailed, it looks happy and inviting too.

Conclusion

Little Big Planet 2 on PS3 is engaging, clever, fun, unique, creative and the list goes on and on.  If you are looking for a game with a cut and dry storyline to just play and complete, this game will disappoint but if you are interested in endless opportunities of fun and adventure, Little Big Planet 2 will keep you busy for a long time.
