Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion XL Review

If you are truly a big fan of the fun, animated programming which Cartoon Network has created, you’ll go bananas over this game.  While the game itself has received a lot of bad press for its perceived shortcomings, most of us gamers are attracted to certain games which feature our favorite characters, right?  If this describes you, then Punch Time Explosion XL should be the game to get.

Visuals

Given that Cartoon Network’s Punch Time Explosion XL features a host of cartoon characters, it only makes sense that its art style will lean heavily toward cartoonish graphics.  The bottom line is, all the characters (and some of the backgrounds) are all essentially identical to how they appear and are portrayed in (or on) their own shows.    Visually speaking, the bright and colorful nature of this game is highly appealing, especially for younger players who can’t get enough of Cartoon Network’s programming.

Gameplay

The weaknesses of the game are pretty much inherent to its gameplay.  Does this mean that the gameplay is broken though?  Certainly not; Punch Time Explosion XL features the same kinds of mechanics that you will find in nearly any horizontally oriented fighter or brawler.   This game plays like a really fun “button masher”; that is to say, it’s a great title for casual gamers who aren’t looking for the next Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

This release of version of Punch Time Explosion, appropriately titled XL, is actually an update of sorts from a previously released game.  Now everything looks better, new features and game modes are available, and new characters have found their way into the game.   While it’s hard to imagine anyone spending hours upon hours with this game, younger gamers will likely appreciate the action, if only from a visual standpoint.

Verdict

If you are really into the Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, or any of the other great Cartoon Network shows out there, you will likely get a kick out of this light-hearted game.  Serious gamers aren’t going to find many redeemable traits which will entice them, but that’s not really what this Punch Time Explosion XL is really aiming for.  This game is more of a service to fans, casual gamers and perhaps even younger players who might find other types of fighting games to be too hardcore.  As previously mentioned, the characters and how they are animated is the big draw for CN: PTE XL.  There really aren’t that many games which feature these wonderful characters and certainly not all in one place (as we see here).   So, if you’ve ever wanted to take control of your favorite Cartoon Network character and bust some heads, this game offers you just that sort of opportunity.
