The remake of Syndicate has a lot of folks out polishing pitchforks, and from what’s been shown so far, Starbreeze has taken some pretty substantial liberties with the Syndicate setting and drastically altered the gameplay. Now, even excellent games like Syndicate or Shadowrun leaned on their atmosphere to be just right; that stark, inescapable high-tech ruinscape was a pillar which bore the weight of occasionally repetitive fights and leveling up. That this has been swapped out for a slick, neon aesthetic is a choice not to have been made lightly. Also unlike the previous Syndicate, this one isn’t a strategy…
There is a tendency among writers of sci-fi/adventure trilogies to bring out the big guns in the last act. I’m using “guns” literally in this case. Remember how there was lots of kung-fooey but a conspicuous lack of large-scale combat with chain-gun-armed mechs in the first two Matrix movies? Which Lord of the Rings movie has the most CGI warriors again? If you’re going to have an all-out clash of civilizations, it’s hard not to save up the really climactic battle for the third act, if you want all three volumes to sell that is. This rule also applies to…
Big robots exist to crush things. This fact is well-known. Armored Core 5 – the latest and greatest in the long-running mech -battle series – understands this principle, and is dedicated to the corollary that if Big Robots Crushing things is fun, then logically, Many Big Robots Crushing Things equals Many Funs. Much fun. It would be cool. I’m inclined to agree, but naturally open to putting this idea to the test of execution. Mutiplayer is the big new addition to Armored Core 5. My, my, it seems like everything is getting online these days. Even Mass Effect has a…
charistorches: – In Skyrim, you get to fight dragons. Huge, menacing, dangerous, very powerful dragons, and you either beat the snot out of them or get eaten. That’s the big selling point of the latest Elder Scrolls game: you fight a lot of dragons. I’m going to talk about other things first, but then come back to that. Just remember that a big part of this game involves bloody, tooth-tearing, armor-smelting dragon combat. If you don’t have that much time today, just skip to the last paragraph and then make up your mind about whether to buy this game. Starting…
ID, the company that (in a way) originally put first person shooters on the map, has really outdone itself this time. They’ve given us Rage, a game that doesn’t really do anything particularly new, yet still somehow manages to deliver on multiple fronts. What Rage lacks in style, it delivers in the visual department. In fact, many are saying that Rage is an example of what one could accurately label as the most impressive graphics seen on a console to date. Visuals aside, Rage offers us a fairly shopworn story featuring a few twists and turns, but remaining fairly predictable. …
If you’re one of the many that saw the Battlefield 3 trailers (pre-release) and were in awe of the visuals, you’re probably wondering if it lives up to the hype, right? The truth is that Battlefield 3 is a game with a split personality; on the one hand, it features an incredible multiplayer, but on the other, a somewhat unflattering single player campaign. But this won’t be a deterrent for many gamers as the multiplayer aspect of this title is pretty incredible to say the least. What makes Battlefield 3 so great is its sense of scale. If you want to…
Tekken is a game franchise that was at one time, the best thing running in its genre. This of course also made it “the game to beat” if you were constructing a fighting game, meaning; it spawned a lot of competitors. This is not to say that Tekken went away, or became less important / successful, only that it wasn’t the new kid on the block anymore, so to speak. Well all that changes with the release of Tekken Hybrid, it is back on the scene and ready to vengefully kick some ass. So what’s so special about Tekken Hybrid,…
On its face, FIFA 12 is a stunning achievement in sports gaming. Not only is this particular title a historical watershed for the series it is also extremely beautiful and so realistic that you might think you’re actually participating. For fans of football games (soccer, if you’re in the US), FIFA is really the premier choice. Sure there are others, but only FIFA has the gameplay, features, and fan base required to take it to the next level. In other words FIFA is to football (soccer), what Modern Warfare is to the fps deathmatch. But enough about that, what is…
If you’re one of the hordes of individuals that played and loved every minute of the original Goldeneye (N64) you’ll love everything about 007: Goldeneye Reloaded. As its name implies, reloaded is indeed a remake or rather, re-imagining of the original game. However, this isn’t to say that it is simply an HD re-skinning; no, this is an entirely new game that builds upon everything we loved (or continue to love) about the original, but built a new with new technology, for a new age. When you begin playing Goldeneye reloaded you’ll quickly realize that nothing remains of the original…
Full motion, or rather motion capture controlling has really come a long way in the last few years, this is especially evident in the latest Just dance kids release (2) for the Playstation move. The game is a marvel, it is literally able to take the player and project them into the game while at the same time judging and gauging their abilities in relation to those of their friends. Just Dance Kids 2 also features many teeny bopper oriented hits which will undoubtedly appeal to many young gamers. This is simply non-stop fun that’s angled for a slightly younger…
Rockstar have released the first official trailer for Grand Theft Auto V. Los Santos will be the name of the city, which is based around Los Angeles, something we already knew. However, we have found two serious clues that we believe we have answered that give us an idea of which areas of the map will be featured: Clues We Have Found: Here is a poster that we noticed attached to the metal fence. We think that this poster demonstrates and has the same appearance as Santa Monica Pier, which is located in…
James Allsopp (Interviews) Susan Cummings, Executive Producer, Tiny Rebel Studios (Producing and Directing The War of the Worlds) Could you run through the weapons in The War of the Worlds? War of the Worlds is a game based on the story of one man who must ultimately survive, more so than attempt to fight, the fierce Martians. The majority of the game you will be unarmed, using only your wits to survive a variety of increasingly difficult weapons and machines in the Martian arsenal including the red weed, the spiders, the iconic Tripods, the drones, probes, and black smoke. That…
It seems difficult for any football game to keep pace with the undisputed market leader, FIFA, but Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 is giving it a good go. Although the latest release to the PES series is more of a step forward rather than a massive leap, every improvement is positive and designed to provide a more well-rounded football experience. PES 2012 might not come packed full of as many features as competitor FIFA 12, but for a fun football experience filled with fast and fluid gameplay, this could be the option for you. Gameplay The majority of the many little…
Jumping into a Formula 1 car to outpace the likes of former champions Vettel, Hamilton and Button around Monaco isn’t something that ordinary folk are likely to do. Controlling these beasts takes years of practice, not to mention an intimate knowledge of the tracks that you’ll be flying around full pelt. This level of difficulty is reflected in the newest F1 game to reach our consoles, F1 2011. Offering an experience more intense than the vast majority of racing games, this simulation experience will put you behind the wheel of what feels like a genuine Formula 1 car. For the…
The Line Producer for FIFA 12, David Rutter, may be promising a ‘revolutionary year for FIFA’, but what does that actually mean? Will FIFA 12 offer much more to fans that already own its predecessor, FIFA 11? EA’s football franchise undoubtedly offers one of the best sporting game experiences around today, and with an estimated 42 million fans it isn’t really surprising that much time and energy has been invested into making this newest game in the series the best yet. Latest PS3 update goes live with version 3.72. PS3 gamers can now download the new update, which won’t take long to install. Don’t expect any major changes in this update; it’s just a few tweaks that will help improve network stability. However, a number of PS3 gamers are worried about changes to the Terms and Conditions with this new update. In the new update the Terms and Conditions have also been changed, which might change an individuals legal position with the PSN and Sony. The change reads as below: “Any dispute resolution proceedings, whether in arbitration or in court, will…
The PS3-exclusive Resistance series has always been a feather in Sony’s cap, with the first game, Fall of Man, remaining as one of the best shooters on offer for a long time. Now the series is back and it’s bigger and better than ever before. With a dark and emotional plotline interweaving throughout the campaign and some more incredible multiplayer action, this truly is a game that will keep you chained to your seat for many an hour. Storyline Unlike the majority of first person shooters that concentrate more on killing and less on plot, Resistance 3 is determined to…
Any new game to enter the first person shooter market instantly faces fierce competition. Without vastly improving on the typical war-based scenario or introducing some revolutionary new gameplay concept, it’s an incredibly difficult genre to even attempt to infiltrate. Unfortunately the developers at Codemasters don’t seem to have quite grasped this concept, creating a new title that features a lacklustre story, a particularly short campaign and only the basics when it comes to multiplayer. Bodycount is a game undoubtedly destined for the Bargain Bin. Storyline The plot of Bodycount has something of a mercenary feel; you are a military asset…
