LittleBigPlanet Karting Review

There’s certainly no denying that the LittleBigPlanet franchise is one of the most enduring game series around and that it possesses an immediately recognizable lead character. Likewise, no one could possibly dispute the fact that Kart (or cart) racers are among the most popular, entertaining and fun types of racing games in existence. Seriously, who doesn’t have at least one favorite kart racing game?

Well, PS3 owners and Sony aficionados can now boast about having their own unique Kart racing title. “LittleBigPlanet Karting” is more-or-less a direct attempt to create a genuine kart racing legacy out of well-known components of the Sony gaming empire. For example, the engine (and game itself) is basically the same that is found in “ModNation Racers”.

So, the idea it seems was to take what is arguably the most lovable and immediately recognizable Sony mascot (Sackboy) and pair him with the most intrinsic kart racer available. The question is; how does the game actually stack up against our expectations as well as all the other kart racers out there?

Visuals

No surprises here, the graphics and level design are perfectly in line with previously released games. Still though, the stock tracks/levels are very intriguing and are a visual feast. Additionally, given that Sackboy is making a return to the screen here, the character models are top-notch and on par with what we’ve come to expect from LBP. Yes, you can also fully customize your Sackboy as well as your kart as well.

Gameplay

Simply put, “LittleBigPlanet Karting” presents very unique gameplay when compared to virtually any other kart racer out there. Sure, you still have to worry about being attacked by other racers, and there are records to try to break; but it differs in that there are loads more options for customization than one might expect. For instance, players can create their own levels, and there are so many mini games and side missions that one can become distracted and lose their focus. All negativity aside, “LittleBigPlanet Karting” is really a lot of fun; just don’t expect the same level of intensity and rivalry you have experienced in other racers to carry over into this one.

The bottom line is that LBPK is really a fantastic game with absolutely wonderful gameplay; it’s just perhaps not as “intense” as some might prefer.

Verdict

If you’re in the market for a new, enjoyable kart racer and you own a PS3, you should give “LittleBigPlanet Karting” a try. Though it could have been much better (especially considering what they had to work with in terms of source materials) LBPK is still a great cartoonish kart racer that features a plethora of modes and options for creative gamers to exploit. Fans of the LittleBigPlanet franchise will obviously want this game, and for good reason, it explores a new side of LBP universe and grants the opportunity to engage in a well-known video game pastime, kart racing.
