Sorcery Review

Hold on to your potions, spell books and magic staff because Sorcery is here to make better use of the Playstation Move system.  After a significant amount of delays and push backs, it seems that Sorcery is finally here to work its magic on us.  If you have been intently following all the hype and press for this title however, you might be harboring expectations which Sorcery simply isn’t going to be able to live up to.  Does this mean that it is a bad game?  Absolutely not!  In fact, many have even ventured to say that this is one of the best (if not the best) Playstation Move games currently inexistence.

Visuals

One of the coolest things about this game is its “visual feel”, if you will.  Sorcery’s environments and atmosphere certainly give off an enjoyable sense of wonder, adventure, and intrigue.  However, this game is firmly planted in the bank of cartoonish fun as opposed with stark fantastic realism, which is good because (as previously noted) this might be a game in which much younger gamers would show interest.  Having said that, many of your typical LOTR-inspired fantasy locations are to be found here in ample amounts; think ruins and caves and you’re getting pretty close.

Gameplay

At its heart, Sorcery is a platformer that’s designed to appeal to the widest possible audience in terms of age group.  So, while its story might seem to be angled toward younger gamers, plenty of veterans will be charmed with this game as well (and its many fine attributes and modern appointments).  The real story concerning this game is that it requires you to have already purchased a Playstation Move wand / controller.

Sorcery

While the fact that Sorcery requires the Move might limit its appeal, it certainly hasn’t limited its “fun factor”.  The bottom line is, Sorcery is an extremely fun game to play because of its integration with the Playstation Move system.  Casting spells with your Move wand is so much fun that it should be illegal.  Additionally, there’s a great amount of precise control that you have concerning spell casting.  What’s more, you can actually combine various spells to form even more powerful permutations.

Verdict

While Sorcery is not a perfect game, it is extremely fun, especially because of its integration and reliance on the Playstation Move device.  While this title was probably designed with a slightly younger audience in mind than the typical PS3 fare, gamers of all ages will still have a blast with it.  On the negative side of the fence, Sorcery is a rather short game.  Most players will complete the game in around 6 – 8 hours and since it’s largely linear, there aren’t many reasons for most gamers to go back and give it another go.  Likewise, Sorcery has absolutely no online multiplayer components available to speak of.  However, despite its shortcomings and seemingly limited appeal, Sorcery is still worth your attention and at least a couple of play-throughs perhaps. Happy spell-casting!
