Breakneck speeds and deranged courses with fully-armed automobiles darting about wreaking havoc on each other; what other game(s) would fit this description apart from the Twisted Metal series? Bringing the concept of vehicular combat into the modern age (and then pushing it bit further), we have Twisted Metal. So, what kind of game is Twisted Metal? What’s it all about, you ask? Try to imagine a wild multiplayer deathmatch game redesigned to feature various types of mutated vehicles and exciting characters. What makes Twisted Metal so special is that it is truly one-of-a-kind.
Visuals
On its face, Twisted Metal is a real visual delight. Everything is presented in full HD with virtually no major glitches or frame-rate issues mucking up your gaming experience. Many of the locations featured as part of various maps are essentially well-known landmarks which have been disfigured and damaged as a result of some, apparently, post-apocalyptic event. This installment of the Twisted Metal franchise takes all the previously explored graphical avenues and elevates them to new levels. Twisted Metal has a decidedly arcade-like feel and look to it, which perfectly compliments its frantic style.
Gameplay
To say that this game is simply fun, is an incredible understatement. The truth is, Twisted Metal is ridiculously fun, especially when you’re online as battling it out with multiple players. The vehicles themselves handle extremely well, which is very important for games which feature automobiles in any capacity. Handling is very tight and responsive, as are the controls for the mounted weapons. While this title does feature a single player story, most people are going to derive most of their pleasure from it by playing the online multiplayer modes.
Likewise, you can win / unlock special items / awards by competing in online matches (new vehicles, skins, etc…). There are not really any other games that immediately spring to mind which could be used to draw a comparison to this game (aside from the previous Twisted Metal releases of course). The real appeal of Twisted Metal is that is presents a certain type of gameplay which works extremely well and is also very well-known by fans. If the gameplay weren’t amazing, this title would be virtually worthless. Luckily, Twisted Metal delivers the goods and in ample serving sizes.
Verdict
There’s a good reason why Twisted Metal is getting high marks from critics, it’s a truly stellar game. As previously mentioned, this game is a lot of fun, so fun in fact that you might be left wondering if it’s even legal. Though on a more serious note, the multiplayer modes offer gamers not only the righteous competition that they are acclimated to, but also hours upon hours of excitement. In all honesty, there’s not a lot to complain about; if you liked previous Twisted Metal releases or have an interest in vehicle-based combat / death matches, this is the game for you. If you consider yourself to be any kind of fan of any of the previously released Twisted Metal games, you really owe it to yourself to pick up this unique and highly enjoyable game today.
